Born in South Africa and now calling Portugal home, James McBride has spent a lifetime at the intersection of world-class hospitality, philanthropy, and adventure. His journey began with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, taking him from The Carlyle in New York to some of the world’s most celebrated hotels, before becoming Co-Founder and CEO of NIHI Hotels, repeatedly recognised among the finest hotels in the world and recently awarded multiple Michelin Keys.

His story stretches far beyond hospitality. From the ancient Marapu traditions of Sumba and the philanthropic work of the Sumba Foundation and Rotary Hospitality Academy, to the emerging nation of Timor-Leste, where Nobel Peace Prize laureate and President José Ramos-Horta serves as patron of the hospitality school, James has spent decades working at the crossroads of culture, community and tourism.
