In 1993, João Nicolau de Almeida, son of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the creator of Casa Ferreirinha’s iconic Barca Velha, began the process of establishing Quinta do Monte Xisto alongside his children, Mateus, João and Mafalda. Located in the Douro Superior sub-region, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, the estate covers a total area of 55 hectares, including 10 hectares of vineyards farmed organically since they were first planted. The
family has always believed that preserving the biodiversity of the terroir is essential, both for the vineyards and for the region as a whole. Once vinification is complete, the wines are transported to Vila Nova de Gaia, where they are aged, bottled and dispatched. The Mediterranean microclimate of the Douro contrasts with Gaia’s Atlantic climate, whose natural temperature and humidity conditions provide an ideal environment for wine ageing. Between the Douro and Gaia, conversations unfold - they talk, share stories and laugh about the vineyards, wine and life. Thus, Nicolau de Almeida was born, continuing the family’s centuries-old legacy of winemaking in the Douro.
