The exhibition “Volta ao Mundo / Around the World” by Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021), on view at the National Pantheon in Lisbon, is a temporary installation that engages with the monument’s walls and floor—ephemeral in nature—in contrast with the stone material, a quintessential symbol of solidity and permanence.
Created one year before the passing of American artist Lawrence Weiner, “Around the World” can be interpreted as a reflection on the division of the world, formalized with papal approval between the Catholic Monarchs and the Perfect Prince—a vision that continues to shape the globe even decades after the end of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires.
A unique project by Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, the installation is supported by the estate of the American artist—an iconic figure of international conceptual art—and by D. André de Quiroga.
A publication accompanies the exhibition, featuring texts by D. André de Quiroga, Santiago Macias (director of the National Pantheon), and curator Bartomeu Marí.
